Neither. We are missionaries.
Church staff maintain the structures of church life.
We are not on staff at First United Methodist Church, but are a part of the congregation. As missionaries with The Mission Society, we are partly in and partly out of the church. In the church, we work closely with staff and laity to best assist current ministries, and to increase our accountability. We work with many different areas of ministry, especially with the mission team, outreach, and discipleship. We hope to help guide the formation and participation of what it means for a church to “be downtown for good.”
Church planters are those who create new structures of church life in areas that may not already have a church.
We are not planting a church, rather working alongside existing churches, with our primary relationship being with First United Methodist.
Missionaries reach into the structures of non-church life and support local leaders to create church life, either within existing churches or in building new churches.
Because missionaries work within multiple cultural structures, it seems natural that our position be one of missionaries. It is a missionary’s role to be an interpreter of the gospel, and to bridge the communication gap between and among cultures.
Are you church staff, or are you starting a new church?
